MKBHD faces backlash over pricey wallpaper app ‘Panels’
Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, found himself in hot water after the launch of his new wallpaper app, Panels. The app, revealed during his highly anticipated iPhone 16 review, quickly sparked criticism due to its $49.99 per year subscription price and concerns over privacy permissions.
The Panels app offers curated high-res wallpapers from digital artists, but users were not happy with the premium pricing, which locks high-quality downloads behind a subscription paywall. Free users can still access wallpapers but must settle for lower resolution and watch ads.
In response to the uproar, Brownlee addressed the feedback on X, saying, "I hear you!" and promising to adjust ad frequency for free users. He also acknowledged concerns about the app’s data tracking, explaining that the permissions were likely “too broad” and would be corrected.
Part of building in public is getting mass feedback immediately, which is pretty dope. Almost exactly like publishing a YouTube video
First thing we're doing is fixing the excessive data disclosures, as people rightfully brought up. For transparency, we'd never actually ask for… x.com/i/web/status/1…

Brownlee, known for his tech reviews, has been venturing into creating his own products, and Panels is the latest in his efforts. He assured fans that the app will evolve, starting with wallpapers but with more features in the future, and emphasized a 50/50 profit split with featured artists.
YouTube explores how gen AI is shaping the creator landscape
YouTube is leaning hard into generative AI, with 92% of creators already incorporating AI tools into their process, according to a new report. But there’s a catch—90% of creators feel they’re not fully tapping into AI's potential.
YouTube’s 17-page report, The Future of Tech and Creativity, outlines practical ways AI can help creators right now, from streamlining editing to generating new content ideas. The report also emphasizes AI’s role in improving content quality, enhancing visuals, and optimizing audio.
While many AI tools haven’t lived up to the "game-changing" hype, YouTube offers a more grounded, realistic view of AI's benefits. It focuses on how AI can handle time-consuming tasks, provide a creative sounding board, and help creators reach wider audiences with audio translations and better production value.
The key takeaway? YouTube is trying to demystify AI and show creators how to use it to level up their content creation without overpromising its impact.
